PHOTO EXHIBITION
at SPEAK FOR WALL, TOKYO
2026 Aug.19 – Sept.13

Photographer Wataru Furuta is widely recognized for creating key visual imagery for actors, performers, and public figures. Through his work in advertising, television, film, and theatre, he has earned a reputation not only for capturing the essence of his subjects but also for shaping the visual identity of the characters they portray.

This exhibition presents Furuta’s previously unseen portrait series dedicated to a single actor: Yuki Tamaki. Since making his acting debut in 2010, Tamaki has received widespread acclaim for his remarkable performances in numerous stage productions, including Yowamushi Pedal, Kaikyō no Hikari (The Light of the Strait), and Touken Ranbu, as well as for his work in film and television. His exceptional expressive range has established him as one of the most distinctive actors of his generation.

Portraiture has always been at the heart of Furuta’s photographic practice. Having collaborated with Tamaki over many years on promotional photography and calendars for popular stage productions such as the Messiah, Daihi, and HELI-X series, Furuta became increasingly fascinated by what he describes as the actor’s unique “presence.”

“His presence is dangerous, humid, transparent, and elegant all at once. I wanted to pursue the dignity possessed by a truly exceptional performer, together with the subtle poison hidden beneath it.”

Driven by this fascination, Furuta continued photographing Tamaki both during professional assignments and in more personal moments, gradually building an extensive archive.

From this archive, the exhibition presents a carefully selected group of monochrome prints. The exhibition title, KEMONOHARA, is borrowed from a short story by the Japanese novelist Kotaro Tsunekawa, whose work explores the mysterious notion of kehai—an intangible sense of presence or atmosphere.

The resulting photographs portray Tamaki not on stage, but in the liminal spaces surrounding performance—backstage, between rehearsals, and in moments of quiet transition. Together they form a powerful body of monochrome work that captures the aura of an actor whose singular path has come to embody the spirit of his era.

Furuta says:

“I hope viewers will encounter someone who is dark, nostalgic, gentle, and solitary—like the wind.”

KEMONOHARA is the first photographic series created through the collaboration between Wataru Furuta and Yuki Tamaki, and this exhibition marks its first public presentation. Ten framed prints will be exhibited and available for purchase.
